From Scorched to Soothed: Your Naturopathic Guide to Sunburn Relief
With summer fast arriving, it feels important to discuss sun care. While avoiding sunburns in the first place is the goal, even the most prevention-focused folks are likely to get a sunburn at some point.
The good news is that sunburns are self-limiting, meaning they will go away on their own in 3-5 days and there are fantastic naturopathic remedies available to provide comfort in the healing process.
Understanding First-Degree Sunburns
There are varying degrees of sunburns.
For this blog, I will be talking exclusively about first-degree sunburns. First-degree sunburns are exclusively located in the superficial structures (or epidermis) of the skin. The skin is dry, red, and painful. Additionally, when pressed on, the skin blanches (or turns from red to white.)
Sunburns that are blistering or have severe pain and systemic symptoms such as fever, headache, vomiting, or dehydration may be a sign of sun poisoning and require additional evaluation by a healthcare provider.
Soothe Sunburns Naturally
Cool Compresses and Aloe Vera: Instant Relief
Cool Compresses or Soaks: This is one of the simplest and most effective ways to soothe a sunburn. Soak a washcloth in cool water (not ice water) and apply it to the sunburned area.
Aloe Vera Gel: If you’ve got an aloe plant, cut one of the stalks in half, squeeze the gel out of the stalk, and apply it to the skin. If you don’t have a plant readily available, consider a commercial product. Stick to products that contain as few ingredients as possible. I like Badger’s Aloe Gel Unscented.
Homeopathy for Sunburn
Oral Homeopathy:
Urtica urens: Best used for 1st-degree sunburns or hives with stinging or burning pains that feel worse with warm applications.
Causticum: Best used for 2nd-degree sunburns with burns that are sore or raw in nature.

Additional After-Sun Care Tips
Electrolytes: If you’ve been in the sun, you’re likely dehydrated. Dehydration can worsen sunburn symptoms. Sip coconut water or electrolytes like Jigsaw or LMNT. Consider consuming food with high water content like watermelon or cucumbers to get additional hydration.
Wear Loose Clothing: Tight clothing can rub against your sunburn and create more irritation leading to further discomfort. Stick to loose and breathable clothing.
Topical Herbs: Herbs such as Calendula officinalis and Larrea tridentata may be considered but are best used with the help of a trained and licensed naturopathic doctor or certified herbalist.
