Enhancing Immune Health Naturally: Holistic Foods for Wellness and Well-Being

Do you often find yourself getting sick, only to recover and then fall ill again shortly after?

You don't have to endure constant illness. One way to boost your immune system is by incorporating foods rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants into your diet.

Consider these foods:

Citrus: Oranges, grapefruits, lemons, and limes

Citrus is high in Vitamin C.

Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant.

When faced with stress, illness, exposure to toxins, and smoke, free radicals are formed. Antioxidants, such as Vitamin C, minimize the damage that is created and help reduce inflammation.

Vitamin C also has important actions in reducing the duration of a cold and encourages the body to produce more white blood cells, which help fight pathogens.

MAKE IT PRACTICAL:

  • Squeeze a wedge of lemon in your water or tea during the day

  • Add some grapefruit slices to your dinner salad

  • Have an orange for an afternoon snack

While food sources of Vitamin C are preferred for their natural benefits and additional nutrients, Vitamin C supplements are also available for those who might need an extra boost.

Berries: Blueberries, strawberries, and raspberries

Berries also contain antioxidants as well as important vitamins, including vitamins A, B6, C, E, K, and Folate.

Vitamin E is another powerful antioxidant and helps the body to identify and ward off pathogens

Vitamin K is vital for proper blood clotting. Folate is particularly important in pregnancy as it is vital for proper cell growth and development. Vitamin B6 supports biochemical reactions in a variety of processes. And Vitamin A is important for maintaining the health of the skin and the mucosal cells which serve as a barrier against infections.

MAKE IT PRACTICAL:

  • Add a handful of frozen berries to your morning smoothie

  • Chop some strawberries and place them on top of your salad

  • Top your oatmeal with some blueberries!

Ensuring that you include vital antioxidants and vitamins in your diet is one way to improve your immune health.
