Conventional v. Naturopathic: What’s The Difference?

In the realm of healthcare, the diversity of approaches can be overwhelming.

Are you curious about the differences between Conventional and Naturopathic Medicine?

Conventional Medicine:

  • Short new-patient visits (30-40 minutes): Most conventional medicine doctors are constrained by the time restrictions imposed by insurance policies. This may be frustrating or challenging for some patients, particularly if they have complex concerns or extensive medical histories. Follow-up appointments are frequently capped at 15 minutes or focused on addressing a single concern.

  • Problem-focused: Most patients seek care from a doctor when something is wrong, such as a sore throat or an ear infection. However, beyond annual check-ups, there is often a lack of engagement in preventative healthcare or education.

  • Primarily physical health: Although some conventional doctors address mental health concerns, they often prefer to refer patients to specialists. They tend to keep their primary focus on addressing physical concerns.

  • Great for emergencies: Conventional medicine doctors excel in handling emergencies such as burns, car crashes, broken bones, sepsis, and when you need surgery like appendicitis or gall bladder removal. They are particularly important in time-sensitive situations.

  • Prescribes pharmaceuticals: Pharmaceuticals often play a crucial and necessary role in addressing severe infections, thyroid disease, high blood pressure, and mental health concerns. Conventional medicine doctors typically lack training in nutrition or lifestyle treatments.

Naturopathic Medicine:

  • Long new-patient visits (90 minutes): Most naturopathic doctors operate in a cash-pay or sliding-scale model and choose not to contract with insurance. This allows them to spend more time with their patients.

  • Whole-person focused: Naturopathic doctors are trained to view patients as a whole person, going beyond a mere compilation of symptoms. This often involves exploring aspects of your life such as your childhood, social support network, relationships, trauma, work or school environment, stress levels, and your goals.

  • Physical and emotional health: Naturopathic doctors receive comprehensive training in mental health concerns and a diverse array of treatment modalities. We treat a wide range of concerns, from mild work-related stress to intricate chronic conditions such as Lyme disease.

  • Great for chronic disease and acute illness: Whether you're dealing with an ear infection, sore throat, or type II diabetes, naturopathic doctors are equipped to address a wide spectrum of health concerns.

  • Prescribes diet & lifestyle changes, supplements, and pharmaceuticals: Naturopathic doctors undergo training in many diverse treatment approaches, including diet and lifestyle modification, homeopathy, botanical medicine preparations, natural supplementation, mindfulness techniques, and pharmaceuticals. Scope of practice varies across different states

Embrace the diverse benefits of both approaches and make informed choices tailored to your individual health needs.
