How to Get the Most Out of Your Annual Checkup: Avoid These 3 Mistakes

calendar with stethoscope, reminding people to book their annual physical exam

With the end of summer quickly approaching (sorry!), it’s a great time to call your provider to schedule your annual checkup.

Annual checkups are vitally important for optimal health and well-being.

In my experience as a doctor, I've seen firsthand how helping to reduce the risk of chronic illnesses like diabetes and heart disease can save an inordinate amount of time, money, stress, and frustration.

But before you head to your next appointment, make sure you're not making these three common mistakes, which could be keeping you from optimal health.

Mistake #1: Not Preparing a List of Discussion Topics

  • The week before your appointment, open your notes app and start making a list of topics you’d like to discuss.

  • Have you got a nagging cough, having a hard time sleeping? Add it to the list.

  • Bring that list to your appointment and go through it with your provider.

Mistake #2: Not Requesting Comprehensive Lab Tests

  • Unfortunately, not all providers order labs equally. I see so many folks whose PCP only orders a CBC, CMP, lipid panel, and TSH. Those are not adequate yearly labs.

  • These are the labs I order yearly (and often twice a year) for my patients:

    • CBC

    • CMP

    • Full Thyroid Panel including FT3, FT4, TSH, Thyroid Antibodies

    • Lipid Panel

    • Hydroxy 25 OH Vitamin D

    • Serum B12

    • Iron Panel

    • Ferritin

    • HgA1c

    • CRP

Mistake #3: Not Seeking Referrals When Needed

  • Need a regular therapist, a physical therapist, or a dermatologist?

  • Ask your provider who they recommend. We often have insider knowledge about who's reputable, inclusive, and has shorter wait times.

Annual checkups are a powerful tool for taking charge of your health. By avoiding these common mistakes and proactively advocating for yourself, you can maximize the benefits of your appointment and take significant steps towards a healthier future.

Lastly, if you’re not satisfied with your provider or you want a more comprehensive approach, I’m accepting new patients who are residents of Arizona, Washington, DC, and Vermont. Schedule a consultation here!
